Week 7 Assignment #5

I did the 4 assessments on Chava a 2nd grader. What is very interesting about Chava is that she is a very strong student who taught herself how to read at a very young age. She is a fairly fluent reader and can read books at a pretty high level, however she is missing a lot of skills that students gain from the in class lessons as will be seen in the results below:
Print Awareness:
Chava has great print awareness. She was able to locate the title of the book and the author. She was able to count words in a sentence and how many sentences were on the page. She was able to locate the beginning of the pages and was able to locate a specific word when I gave her directions. The only term Chava was not aware of was paragraph. I would continue to point out all the different important parts of the book and include paragraph. She is a bright child and I am sure she will catch on quickly.
Phonemic Awareness:
This is the skill that Chava is greatly missing. At first I started by asking her how many sounds she hears in specific words. She had a very hard time figuring it out. I also pointed out a few words in the story and asked her how many syllables there were and she got a few right and a few wrong. She had a difficult time differentiating between the number of different sounds and the number if syllables in a word.  She was however very good at rhyming. I am wondering if she is just not comfortable with the first type of questions I asked her. Therefore I think I would implement a few activities and then reassess soon after to see if she just needs some exposure to the idea as her lack of phonemic awareness does not affect her reading. I would use the syllable suitcase idea and adapt it to the number of sound in a word as well. Since she is older, I would have her make a list of things she would like to pack for her vacation. I would then have her sort the words by number of syllables and number of sounds. I would also encourage her to play the games form the sites listed below.
Phonics:
Chava's phonics seems very up to par. As she was reading the only rule I noticed she had a hard time with was "tion" words. However, once I pointed out the specific word and asked her to read it she was able to. I asked her if she knows what the "tion" says and she was able to tell me correctly. I would however implement one lesson that focuses on these words just to reinforce and ensure that she really understand this rule. Perhaps I would to a make the word activity with a few words that have this spelling pattern.
Fluency:
Chava was able to read 79 words in a minute with 5 errors. She scored a WPAM of 74, which is fairly high for her age. Based on her mother's suggestion I had her read parts from a book from the American Girl Doll Series. These books are at a 3-5 grade level. She read beautifully, quickly and pretty much with ease. She had a hard time with a few unfamiliar words but she was mostly able to sound them out. The only thing in regards to fluency that I would like to suggest is to practice reading with a little more expression. I would have her listen to the story recorded as a model and then repeat it back out loud.
Chava is a strong reader with a great amount of skill, I hope after a little practice she will be completely up to par in all areas.

  1. I like how you clearly labeled each assignment and gave clear suggestions for each.
