Week 2 Assignment 3

I learned so much from the reading rockets website. There were a few specific ideas that I really like and I hope to use in my classroom. I really love the second to last video about the writing workshop. the teacher creates such an a great community where students gain important skills from one another. I love the different methods she uses to teach a skill and the way she varies the activities so students become very comfortable with an idea without getting bored. Another amazing thing she did is the way she participated in the activity and did the writing assignments along with the children.
Another one of my favorite methods is the jigsaw method. I love it mainly for the way it involves the students and allows them to become active learners. I think giving students the feeling that they are responsible for the learning of others is a great way to motivate and encourage them to give the work their all. Students will also feel important and mature with the given responsibility. Lastly, at the end they will feel like they gained a tremendous amount of knowledge in a relatively short amount of time. It is also a great method to have students learn to work together as a group. Lastly, I think by observing the students a teacher can do a great deal of assessing children in many different areas, especially as they work independently and the teacher is not needed to lead the class.
I found the semantic gradients to be a genius way to teach vocabulary to students. I love the way the students work through the words, use the information they know to figure out the pieces they do not know. When people are given the chance to figure something out on their own it becomes a part of them and is much easier to remember and use in the future.
In general, the first few videos were very informative and gave many different ideas to help children from a very young age learn to read. I think the build up is so important and can have a lasting effect on children.
I also found the WCPM method mentioned in one of the link to be very helpful. It can be used to screen, diagnose and monitor students reading. I hope to implement this method as well as others.
I loved all the information I got from the website and I hope to incorporate a lot of it into my literacy instruction.
