Week 3 Assignment 3

  • What is QRI5? An informal reading assessment tool. 
  • What is the purpose of using QRI5? It can be used to determine a child's reading level, place the child in an appropriate reading group, choose a appropriate reading material for the student, track growth and much more. It is also helpful tool when planning lessons. 
  • Have you seen similar assessment activities like QRI5? What are they? I have never observed or seen to many assessment acitvities. 
  • What is your impression of QRI5? I think it is really helpful on so many levels for teachers of students of all ages. It is seems very clear and easy to use. It also seems simple to analyze the results and use them to determine the next step. I hope to use QRI5 as a literacy teacher.

Week 7 Assignment #5

I did the 4 assessments on Chava a 2nd grader. What is very interesting about Chava is that she is a very strong student who taught herself how to read at a very young age. She is a fairly fluent reader and can read books at a pretty high level, however she is missing a lot of skills that students gain from the in class lessons as will be seen in the results below: Print Awareness:  Chava has great print awareness. She was able to locate the title of the book and the author. She was able to count words in a sentence and how many sentences were on the page. She was able to locate the beginning of the pages and was able to locate a specific word when I gave her directions. The only term Chava was not aware of was paragraph. I would continue to point out all the different important parts of the book and include paragraph. She is a bright child and I am sure she will catch on quickly.
